After October’s daily swings of 3–7%, KOSPI has bounced back. Here is how lump-sum and staged investing compare under five hypothetical scenarios.

🎧 Post Summary

📌 1-Minute Summary

On November 2, KOSPI rose 2.24% to close at 5,859.08, led by institutional buying. It recovered part of the 3.48% plunge on October 30 in a single session. The index is still 8.2% below its October 12 close but 7.1% above its October 26 close. When daily moves are this large, investors wonder whether to buy all at once or in stages. We compared investing KRW 12 million as a lump sum with investing KRW 1 million a month for 12 months, across five hypothetical scenarios. Lump-sum investing came out ahead in a rising market, while staged investing did better in a falling or V-shaped market. This week brings the U.S. midterm elections, and the Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Board meets on November 26.

After a sharp drop and a rebound, everyone wonders whether this is the bottom or whether prices will fall further. But a bottom is only visible in hindsight, which is why many investors consider buying in stages. This post uses scenario tables to show when staging helps and when it hurts, then lays out this week’s key dates and a checklist for your own situation.

1. What Was Different About KOSPI on November 2

KOSPI closed at 5,859.08, up 128.34 points (2.24%) from the previous session, and KOSDAQ rose 1.38% to 734.36. The KOSPI swung between an intraday low of 5,616.50 and a high of 5,910.83, a range of nearly 300 points. Institutions were net buyers of KRW 1.2329 trillion, while foreigners net sold KRW 373.1 billion and individuals net sold KRW 1.3475 trillion. Among individual stocks, Hyosung Heavy Industries (+13.32%), Hyundai Glovis (+11.26%) and Hanwha Ocean (+9.80%) rose sharply, while Samsung Biologics (-4.37%) and Shinhan Financial Group (-3.13%) fell. Analysts pointed to buying by pension funds and other institutions, along with share buybacks by non-financial corporations, as support for the rebound.

The table below shows how much KOSPI has swung since mid-October.

Note: This table excerpts the days of roughly 3% or larger moves that this blog covered in its market reports, plus November 2. It does not include every trading day. The November 2 close is 8.2% below the October 12 close and 7.1% above the October 26 close (5,469.47), which was the lowest level in about seven months.

2. Lump Sum vs. Staged: Five Hypothetical Scenarios

We compared the value after 12 months of the same KRW 12 million invested in three different ways. The price paths are assumptions to aid understanding, not forecasts.

Assumed index pathLump sum6-month staged12-month staged
A. Steady rise (100→120)KRW 14.40M (+20.0%)KRW 13.83M (+15.3%)KRW 13.23M (+10.2%)
B. Steady fall (100→80)KRW 9.60M (-20.0%)KRW 10.03M (-16.4%)KRW 10.61M (-11.6%)
C. V-shaped rebound (100→80→100)KRW 12.00M (0.0%)KRW 13.14M (+9.5%)KRW 13.39M (+11.6%)
D. Inverted V (100→120→100)KRW 12.00M (0.0%)KRW 11.11M (-7.4%)KRW 10.94M (-8.8%)
E. Sideways chop (around 100)KRW 12.00M (0.0%)KRW 11.97M (-0.2%)KRW 11.98M (-0.2%)

Assumptions: The total amount invested is KRW 12 million. The lump sum goes in entirely at the start of month 1. The 6-month plan invests KRW 2 million at the start of each of 6 months, and the 12-month plan invests KRW 1 million at the start of each of 12 months. Values are measured at the 12-month point, and money not yet invested earns 0% interest. Fees, taxes and dividends are excluded. In A and B the price moves in a straight line. In C and D it moves in a straight line to 80 or 120 over six months and then returns to 100. In E it oscillates by roughly 4% around 100. All figures were calculated in code.

3. How to Read the Table

  • In the rising market (A), the lump sum earned the most, because staged buyers purchase later portions at higher prices.
  • In the falling market (B), staging lost less: -20.0% for the lump sum versus -11.6% for the 12-month plan.
  • In the V-shaped rebound (C), staging won. Even though the index only returned to its starting level, the units bought at low prices lifted the 12-month plan to +11.6%.
  • In the inverted V (D), staging did worse than the lump sum, because expensive units accumulated during the rise.
  • In the sideways market (E), there was almost no difference between methods.

In short, staged investing is not a way to boost returns; it reduces the risk of picking a bad entry point. You give up some upside in a rising market and lose less in a falling one. Because nobody can know what comes next, it is better to choose a method based on your own time horizon and tolerance for losses rather than on any one scenario.

4. Key Dates This Week and This Month

The U.S. midterm elections take place on November 3 local time. Reports noted that vote counting could overlap with Korean market hours on the morning of November 4 (Korea time) and add volatility (as reported on November 2). Daishin Securities said its fourth-quarter KOSPI target would be 6,700 if Democrats lead or Congress is divided, and that the lower bound could fall to 4,950 if Republicans win both chambers. Kiwoom Securities, by contrast, pointed out that in 2018 and 2022, when interest rates were rising, markets gave back their post-midterm rebounds and returned to election-day levels after 12 months. It argued that investors should watch whether rate pressure eases rather than expect a sustained rally from the election alone. That makes the Bank of Korea’s November 26 meeting another date to watch.

One analysis in mid-October also noted that foreign ownership of Korean semiconductor stocks had fallen to the 48% range, the lowest since 2010 (as reported on October 16). With doubts about capital flows and the durability of AI investment still a factor, treat the forecasts above as scenarios, not certainties.

5. A Checklist for Your Own Approach

  • Decide when you will need the money. If you may need it within one to two years, plan more conservatively for volatility.
  • Ask yourself whether you could hold on through a daily drop of around 5%.
  • Set the number and spacing of installments in advance. For example, investing the same amount on the same day each month can reduce emotional trading.
  • Check that you are not concentrated in a single stock or sector.
  • Remember that fees and taxes can make your actual returns differ from the table.

📌 Good to Know

  • The price paths in the table are assumptions for illustration, not past or future KOSPI returns.
  • Neither lump-sum nor staged investing is always better; the outcome depends on how the market moves.
  • Brokerage forecasts and election scenarios reflect reports around November 2 and may change with new data and results.
  • This post is for informational purposes only and is not a recommendation to invest, borrow or seek medical treatment. Investment decisions, and any resulting gains or losses, are your own responsibility.

To wrap up: the November 2 rebound was led by institutional buying while foreigners remained net sellers, and the U.S. midterms and the November 26 central bank meeting are still ahead. A bounce does not mean the direction has been decided. Use the table to understand the difference between lump-sum and staged investing, then choose a method that fits when you need the money and how much volatility you can tolerate.
